The Who Sell Out é o terceiro álbum de estúdio do The Who. É um álbum conceitual, organizado como uma coleção de canções não relacionadas intercaladas por anúncios e comerciais falsos. O álbum foi feito para se parecer com uma transmissão da rádio pirata Radio London. (Parte da ironia implícita no título do disco – “The Who Vende-Se” – era que a banda estava mesmo gravando comerciais durante este período de sua carreira, alguns dos quais foram incluídos como faixas bônus no CD remasterizado). O álbum surgiu em um perído em que o Who estava experimentando a música psicodélica. Embora tenha sido eclipsado pelo sucesso posterior de Tommy, The Who Sell Out permanece como um dos álbuns favoritos entre os fãs da banda. A capa é divida em painéis, trazendo em cada um deles um integrante da banda. Capa: Pete Townshend usando um tubo gigante de desodorante Odorono; Roger Daltrey sentado em uma banheira cheia de feijões cozidos Heinz. Contra-capa: Keith Moon passando o creme Medac, tirado de uma embalagem gigante; John Entwistle vestido com uma fantasia de Tarzan, abraçado com uma loira de biquíni em um braço e com um ursinho de pelúcia no outro (numa propaganda do curso Charles Atlas mencionado em um dos comerciais falsos do álbum). The Who Sell Out ficou em 113# lugar na lista dos “500 Melhores Álbuns de Todos os Tempos” da Rolling Stone. Lista de Músicas: 1. ARMENIA CITY IN THE SKY (John Keene) Recorded at IBC, London, October 1967 John ‘Speedy’ Keen was first the drummer and then guitarist and occasional songwriter for Thunderclap Newman, the band for whom Pete produced the number one hit single SOMETHING IN THE AIR in 1969. 2. HEINZ BAKED BEANS (Entwistle) Recorded at De Lane Lea, London, October 1967 The first of several spoof commercials on THE WHO SELL OUT is devoted to the traditional English teatime dish beloved of children. 3. MARY ANNE WITH THE SHAKY HAND (Townshend) Recorded at De Lane Lea, October 1967 This was actually The Who’s third attempt at recording MARY ANNE. They tried an electric version first at Talentmasters Studios in New York on 6 August 1967, and again, also electric, the following day. In the end it was the final version which was released first on THE WHO SELL OUT. 4. ODORONO (Townshend) Recorded at IBC, October 1967 5. TATTOO (Townshend) Recorded at IBC, October 1967 This song became a stage favourite in the late Sixties, usually prefaced by FORTUNE TELLER, and The Who returned to it many times over the years. 6. OUR LOVE WAS (Townshend) Recorded at De Lane Lea, July 1967 7. I CAN SEE FOR MILES (Townshend) Recorded at CBS, London, May 1967, Talentmasters, New York, August 1967, and Gold Star, Los Angeles, September, 1967 The only track to be taken off the album as a single, it was released on 14 October 1967, and reached #10 in the UK, and #9 in the US.
